ABOLITIONIST STRATEGIES FOR SUPPORT

A jailhouse law, guerrilla litigation, and prisoner support study group.

THE MASTER’S TOOLS WILL NEVER DISMANTLE THE MASTER’S HOUSE. THEY MAY ALLOW US TO TEMPORARILY BEAT HIM AT HIS OWN GAME, BUT THEY WILL NEVER ENABLE US TO BRING ABOUT GENUINE CHANGE.

- AUDRE LORDE

  • A jailhouse law, guerrilla litigation, and prisoner support group organized by nox library and Detroit ABC.

Learning the structure of our legal system, including as it pertains to incarceration, is a civic duty. But o make fundamental changes, we can’t rely on litigation. That isn’t to say we shouldn’t keep ourselves informed of how the legal system works. Rather, we have to connect how we navigate the legal system to the larger struggle.

This study group runs on the power of collective action and study. We will learn from each other in addition to the voices of abolitionists and political prisoners.

We will meet bi-weekly beginning with our info session on Sunday, March 6, at 6PM EST via Zoom. The sessions will run until May, at which point we will take on the next step of forming ourselves into a support group for incarcerated folks and their families.

Nox Library is a marxist grass-roots org made up of workers, students, and artists based in Detroit. We provide free literature distribution and host monthly study groups with the mission of building class consciousness in our community. Our focus is on art, class, race, and anti-imperialism.

Detroit Anarchist Black Cross is a collective that supports those who are incarcerated within our communities. They advocate letter writing, court support, and post release objectives. They also support families that are affected by the prison industrial complex.

    1. Ultimately, the legal system is an adversary to justice, not a tool for achieving justice. This is not a study group for pursuing litigation; rather, it’s a study group for rethinking how we view and use the justice system.

    2. Objective of the study group is to keep ourselves informed by understanding the systems incarcerated people are forced to abide by, and use that knowledge to think beyond the processes and laws through which they are expected to use to defend their rights.

    3. We aim to learn and brainstorm a re-imagined approach to confronting the system rather than petitioning it.

    4. We will also build an organized community network for providing incarcerated people the support they need from the outside.
