February 20th Presentation

Red Books Day commemorates the publication of the Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Published on February 21, 1848, in the UK, the Manifesto is a catalyst of revolutionary ideas across the world, from then to now. It has since been translated into dozens if not hundreds of languages and has inspired the ideas and actions of revolutionaries like Vladimir Lenin, Rosa Luxembourg, Mao Zedong, and Ho Chi-Minh, to name very few. While Red Books Day commemorates the publication of the Manifesto in the UK, its true celebration is in the honoring and acknowledgment of all that has come out of the manifesto’s legacy. From prison abolition and the fight against fascism to wild-cat strikes and nationwide protests for Black lives, communism has historically been a force to galvanize and mobilize the working class, the poor, and all oppressed by capitalist powers.

In light of Red Books Day, Nox Library will host a study group on the Communist Manifesto in two parts. The goals of the study group are to break the stigma on the history, legacy, and influence of communism; to promote scientific socialism over utopian socialism; and to provide a means for communal, self-sufficient education centered on the significance of communist thinkers and revolutionaries.
